How to Handle GERD with Some Basic Home Remedies
You may have already had GERD and not even known it. GERD stands for gastro esophageal reflux disease. It occurs usually when you have eaten fatty foods and the acid that is in your stomach backs up into your esophagus. This backup creates an irritation in your food pipe and gives you heartburn-like symptoms.
Besides high fatty foods there are other things that can create GERD. You may have a hiatal hernia, be pregnant or obese. Certain other foods can trigger this condition as well, such as: chocolate, coffee, alcohol, and peppermint.
If you have ever woken up in the middle of the night gasping for breath or trying to swallow, you could have had an episode of GERD. Sometimes the backup of acid burns your throat and you may even experience a sour taste in your mouth. There are things you can do to eliminate this problem and even prevent it from happening again.
Chewing gum after your meal will increase the amount of saliva you are producing which in turn will help to handle the acid in your stomach. Licorice can help to ease any stomach problems you may have. You can either enjoy the candy or buy licorice tablets at the health food store.
Baking soda is a natural when it comes to neutralizing acid. Baking soda is really sodium bicarbonate and when it is used to prevent GERD it just takes about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon in a glass of water and your symptoms will quickly be gone.
You may be experiencing GERD because you are obese. If that’s the case, get yourself on a solid weight loss program and start getting rid of the excess pounds. Try eating smaller meals. And eating your last meal of the day earlier gives you longer to digest your food.
Try eating less fatty foods, especially if you layer them. Bacon and eggs for breakfast followed by a cheeseburger for lunch and chicken wings with blue cheese dressing for dinner is a GERD episode waiting to happen. If you eat that many fatty foods in one day and then lay down for it to process in your body you are bound to end up with some food that doesn’t make it through. Make yourself a cup of hot tea, sip it slowly, and when you go to bed, keep your head raised up to help you digest your foods a little easier.
