More Than a Headache: Migraines - Sympthoms, Causes and TreatmentMigraine – a repeated, usually one-sided, throbbing headache. Headache usually lasts from 4 to 72 hours. It is characterized by varying degrees of severity and frequency of occurrence. Pain increases under the influence of emotion or physical exercises. There is photophobia, excessive sensitivity to sounds and smells, and there are also nausea and vomiting. Migraine is a nuisance which affects women 3-4 times more often than men, and the trouble with it usually appears in adolescence. Unfortunately, this is a hereditary disease and the inheritance from father, means that the symptoms are more severe.

The most common causes of migraine are: physical or mental condition (ex.chronic stress at work or in college)- sleep problems (ex.too little sleep can cause fatigue and stress)- abnormal eating habits (ex.use strict nutritional diet)- hormonal disorders (ex.use of birth control pills)- pressure changes (often felt only by people with migraine)- strong odors (ex.cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes, paints, solvents).

Everyone goes migraine slightly different, so it is possible for both occurrence of only a few individual symptoms, as well as the occurrence of most of them with extremely heavy volume. There are some of them:

  • sensitivity to light(in the middle of the day you can suddenly hurt your eyes from the bright daylight)
  • hyperacusis (heavy sounds can trigger a headache)
  • speech disorders resulting from intense headaches, which makes it impossible to focus on speech
  • numbness of the limbs, resulting in the worst cases even mobility problems
  • chills and sweats
  • palpitations and anxiety

Unfortunately, migraine is a disease that can not be completely cured. You can only reduce the number of seizures and, above all alleviate accompanying symptoms.

If you do not know what causes migraine attacks and you did not avoid it, you should know about how to proceed in order to at least partially alleviate its symptoms. First, cover your windows and turn off the light, because the migraine feels light (called photophobia) and then it is recommended to stay in a darkened room. You should also turn off the television and music to ensure you rest in peace and quiet. Drink so sweetened tea, take painkillers (recommended aspirin for migraine headaches), get yourself a cold compress on the forehead, go to bed and try to sleep. Although it might be difficult, however, there are people who manage to fall asleep despite the troublesome symptoms of migraine.
