How to Get Rid of Bedsores: Natural Remedies
Immobility, and being required to stay in bed for an extended amount of time often results in bedsores. These skin ulcers are the result of pressure on a specific area of skin that continues for a long period of time. These painful sores begin as a red or purplish color, and if they are not addressed quickly enough, they will break open, and often become infected.
The best way of treating a bedsore is to try to prevent it from happening in the first place. This requires the person to change positions either once every hour to two hours, by themselves if they are able, or with assistance from someone else. However, if a bedsore is already present, the following remedies will help them to heal more quickly.
Keep it Clean
The sores should be cleaned with mild soap and water twice a day, or salt water may be used to further speed up the healing process.
Zinc and Vitamin C
Zinc and vitamin C are both important for skin, immune system, and blood vessel health. Take 15mg of zinc, and 500mg of Vitamin C three times per day to help the bedsores heal quickly.
1 teaspoon of goldenseal powder mixed with the Vitamin E from two capsules can be applied to the bedsores three times per day.
Honey and Sugar
Mix equal parts honey and sugar and apply to the sore. Keep the area covered with a bandage to prevent sticking. Honey can also be mixed with turmeric, which is a great anti-inflammatory.
Petroleum jelly applied to the wound, and covered with a bandage ensures that the sore and surrounding skin stays moist for faster healing.
Magnesia and Iodine
Mix milk of magnesia and iodine and allow to sit for 30 minutes. Apply to bedsores several times per day.
Aloe Vera gel provides moisture for the skin, and prevents the sores from spreading. Apply either the gel, or Aloe Vera pulp two times per day.
Lysol can be used as both a preventative and a treatment for bedsores. Spray on area up to three times daily.
Baby or Talcum Powder
Baby powder and talcum powder helps eliminate moisture in the area, and help in the prevention of bedsores and infection.
Vitamin Rich Diet
Eating a healthy diet that contains vitamins A, B, C, D, and E will help strengthen the immune system, and aid in healing.
