One of the things that defines older age is bags under the eyes. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity and our muscles lose their tone, allowing our skin to sag. But there are steps you can take to prevent getting baggy eyes too soon!
Aside from the natural ageing process, there may be other causes of bags under your eyes. If you can identify these, then you can make some simple changes that will help prevent or get rid of bags under your eyes:
• Crash dieting can lead to a sudden reduction in your intake of fats and carbohydrates, and this can have an effect on the appearance around your eyes. When dieting, do it sensibly and gradually (and do it along with an increase in exercise).
• Poor sleep tells on the eyes. If your sleep is being disturbed, try to identify the causes so that you get proper rest. If you can, sleep on your back and with raised pillows to prevent a build up of fluid under the eyes.
• Allergies cause puffy eyes. Identify the source of your allergy, and it won’t be difficult to find a way to eliminate it or to protect yourself from it.
• Sinus infection can cause the eyes to be puffy. Chronic sinus infection is surprisingly common, and may manifest itself as simply as a stuffy nose. If you think you could have a sinus problem that is causing your puffy eyes, look for remedies and techniques that can resolve it.
• Eating salty food can cause the skin to become puffy around the eyes, so review your diet.
If you can’t identify causes for the bags under your eyes, there are still steps you can take. For example, try to avoid rubbing your eyes, as doing so can aggravate the sensitive skin there and make it prone to swelling. Also, if you wear eye make-up, be sure to remove it at bedtime. Eye make-up left overnight can irritate the skin, and lead to bagging.
Quitting smoking can make a huge difference not only to your health, but to the appearance of your skin. Smoking prematurely ages your skin, and stopping can delay those bags appearing under the eyes.
Applying cold things (such as cucumber slices or a covered ice pack) to the skin can reduce swelling and bagging under the eyes, as can increasing your fluid intake. By drinking more water, you’ll be flushing toxins from your body and help with the appearance of your skin.
