Causes of Sour Stomach and What to do about It
Sour stomach has been experienced by most people, but few realize that it occurs when there is too much hydrochloric acid found in the stomach. This often occurs after too many drinks after a night out, but can have other causes as well, either way; it causes a fair amount of discomfort and leaves people searching for a remedy. Sour stomach is commonly known as indigestion as well.
This condition is caused by poor eating, stress, and even something as simple as eating late in the evening or night can cause you to have stomach discomfort. When you lie down directly after eating, it is very easy for stomach acid to escape your stomach and work its way back up the esophagus, causing the burning sensation that is characteristic of the condition. Eating foods full of fat, sugar, or fried close to bedtime is the number one cause of indigestion and sour stomach.
What can be done about it?
There are several approaches you can take to help relieve or prevent this condition. The first step is figuring out what the trigger is and then avoiding it in the future if you can. If eating a late dinner of spicy food then going to bed is the cause, only eat spicy food when you can do so early in the evening.
This gives your body plenty of time to digest the food. If you must eat late, try to find something that is very mild and do not overeat. If you are trying to fix discomfort that is already in full force, try some carrot juice. Drinking just half a glass of this juice should help balance your stomach acid and give you relief from the symptoms—if you can add some fennel it will work even better. Green tea and mint teas are also good for helping sooth the stomach.
People that smoke or drink alcohol will find that they have sour stomach more often than people who do not partake in these activities. Alcohol and Tobacco can also cause more severe health conditions, including painful stomach ulcers that will haunt you for a very long time and require medical treatment in order to find relief. Another good way to help relieve stomach discomfort, especially if it is stress induced, is to try doing yoga or meditating.
