Best Remedies for Dry, Cracked Heels
Cracked heels occur when the skin becomes hard, dry, and flaky. This condition can be the result of obesity, excessively walking barefoot, open-backed shoes, pregnancy, dry climates, diabetes, ill-fitting shoes, or other medical conditions. The condition results when the skin becomes too dry, and loses elasticity so that it does not flex when there are changes in pressure.
The first sign of cracked heels is the formation of calluses. This callus will begin to form tiny cracks, which will result in large fissures, with some getting so bad that they bleed. Eventually, these cracks will get deep enough that they cause severe pain.
The best remedy for dry, cracked heels is to prevent them from happening. Using special heel and foot lotions to keep them moisturized is a great start. If you notice that your heels are already callused, gently using a foot file on the heel can prevent cracking. You should also try to drink plenty of water to keep your skin and body hydrated properly.
Oils are a great treatment for cracked heels. You can use vegetable, sesame, olive, or coconut oil. Wash and dry your heels, and use a foot file or pumice stone to remove the dead skin. Apply the oil to your heels, and let remain overnight for best results.
