We all either live with or know someone who lives with diabetes. In the United States, the rate of those with diabetes is continuously increasing. In 2010, there were over 650,000 diabetes related emergency calls made to hospitals. In addition, diabetes can effect numerous systems in our body, reeking damage if gone untreated.
Diabetes is serious, and finding ways to help reduce its impact on our life is one of the most important things we can do.
So what can we do? Well, we all know that proper and continuous exercise is a good way to curb this problem. In addition, those who are dealing with being overweight while having diabetes can benefit from this. We also know of what foods to eat and what foods not to eat to increase and decrease our blood pressure.
Below are a list of foods for those wanting to avoid diabetes, and those already dealing with it. These will help reduce your risk and let you live healthier.
1. Finding the right kinds of fruit.
Fruit can be an excellent substitute for fattier snacks. Citrus fruits in particular with their high natural sugar content are an excellent way to curb the impulse for additional sweets. In addition to being a rich source of vitamin C, citrus fruits are rich is soluble fibers. Types of citrus fruit you should consider include grapefruit, oranges, and lemons.
In addition, tomatoes that are rich in iron, vitamin C and E, and fiber, are an excellent addition to most meals.
Finally, berries round off the list of fruits by being full of antioxidants that help control blood sugar levels. In addition, they help fortify against heart disease.
2. The leafier the better.
Vegetables and leafy greens are an excellent source of many of the vitamins and minerals responsible for keeping blood sugar low. Spinach, kale, brussels sprouts, and swiss chard are 4 such examples of veggies that will help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Onions on the other hand, with their trace amounts of chromium, help regulate blood sugar levels.
In addition to those growing above ground, some tubers can be especially helpful as well. Sweet potatoes and beets are high in folate and vitamin C.
3. And the rest.
Beyond vegetables and fruits, there are a few other food groups especially helpful. These include yogurt with its high levels of vitamin D, nuts with their healthy fats, whole grains with their complex carbohydrates, and olive oil with its monounsaturated.
